Senior Men - Croatia 'A'
Croatia 'A' Caps | PDF | 264 kb
The Croatia 'A' team plays in matches approved by the Croatian Cricket Federation. The rules by which players can be eligible to play for the 'A' team are determined by the CCF, and the main citeria are shown below:
A player must:
- be a citizen or resident of the Republic of Croatia; or
- be of Croatian descent; and
- participate in the Croatian domestic league and/or other domestic competitions, or actively participate in the development cricket locally.
Euro Twenty-20, 2008
The 'A' team was first selected in 2008, to represent the CFF at the inaugural Euro Twenty-20 tournament which was held in Carmel (Wales) from 13-20 July. The team finished in a creditable 4th position after being narrowly beaten by 9 runs by a Polish XI. Of the 5 matches played at the tournament the team won 2 - which was an excellent result given that most players had not experienced the Twenty-20 format of the game.
Following on from the success in 2008, the 'A' team again competed at the Euro Twenty-20 in 2009, travelling to Carmel again for the tournament. The team was strengthened in relation to the previous year and started the tournament as one of the favourites.
Euro Twenty-20, 2009
As preparation for the tournament, an international friendly match was arranged with Ireland 'A' in Dublin. Ireland is the strongest cricket team in Europe (excluding England which is one of the 'big 10' teams and a test match playing nation), and the difference between the two teams was very evident on the field as Ireland 'A' ran out comfortable winners. The only highlight of the match from our perspective was a fine 50 scored by Michael Gržinić.
The players has possibly not got the Ireland match out of their minds as the Euro Twenty-20 started, and the opening matches were unexpectedly bad. The team lost both opening matches to the Isle of Alderney and Russia, teams who, on paper at least, were not as strong as our team. The turnaround started against Bulgaria, who were resoundingly beaten, and continued against Hungary and then New Victoria CC (a local club) in the plate final.
Besides the satisfaction of winning the plate final, the team had naother reason to celebrate, one of the youngest players of the 'A' team, 19 year-old Nikola Davidović, received the 'best-bowler' award. Nikola took 11 wickets during the tournament at an average of 8.64 runs per wicket.
